How can we ever begin to thank the Stewart family for bringing the Halloween spirit to our village every October with their labor-intensive, completely boggling, creepy fun maze? Every year, I am truly a-mazed that they continue this tradition. It brings so much joy and excitement to every Ridgewood residents both big and small! This year, the maze opened on Monday, October 8 will stay open until Halloween Eve, October 31. And according to my kids, this year’s maze might be “the best ever!”
If you’re new to Ridgewood, soon enough you’ll start hearing the buzz about the maze. You’ll find it on Sheridan Street in the Stewart family’s backyard. For over 20 years, the family has toiled to create a Halloween maze out of 7-foot-tall stakes, twine, clear glass, one-way glass and a hay-covered floor. It’s no child’s play: last year, it took me and my friend almost 30 minutes to make our way out–and that was WITH help from the Stewarts. The maze attracts many people of all ages from all over and is free. Weekend evenings, there’s often a line so if you can make it on a weeknight, you’re better off.
About the maze…
The design of the maze changes every year and is carefully planned out by the family. Each box of the maze is 27″ x 27″. When you enter through a door, there could be one right behind you that you could easily overlook…keeping you searching for the way out a little longer. If you really get desperate, one of the Stewarts is there to shout out clues like, “You tried that door twice already!” The maze is fun for little ones during the light hours. Or come in the evening for a spookier feel when occasionally a giant clown lurks around corners or real hands might grab you.
The whole town thanks you, Stewart family, for bringing so much joy and excitement to our kids year after year!
The maze is located at 124 Sheridan Terrace, Ridgewood and is open from 4pm to 9 p.m on weekdays, and 12:00 pm to 9 p.m on weekends however the hours vary based on the family’s schedule and rain. And yes, admission is free!
