I recently spoke to Rosemary Dark, Job Coach with ECLC in Chatham, to discuss her daughter Emma Dark and how she is contributing to the special needs community. She shared that her daughter Emma is 23 years old, a young adult with special needs who has a passion for dance.
Emma, along with her Madison High student dance assistant, teaches a class in Madison that is specifically designed only for special needs children. The Elks Club, 192 Main Street, has donated their second floor space for use from 4:15-5:15PM every Monday. There, students have the freedom to be themselves as they participate in jazz, hip hop, cheering, etc. And as Rosemary explained, it also gives their Moms a chance to support each other as they enjoy this unique opportunity for their children.
Classes begin on Monday, September 21 and continue through the end of the school year in June 2016. The first class is complimentary and $15 per class thereafter. Emma would love to see more children attending her class on Mondays. Walk-ins are welcome and encouraged. Recommended ages are 7yrs – 16yrs.
In conjunction with Emma’s dance class, the Madison Junior Football League and Recreation Department has agreed to lend cheerleading uniforms and poms poms to the girls so that they may participate in cheering at halftime during Junior football games in Madison this season.
Emma has her Child Development Associate Certification and continues her education at County College of Morris to obtain a degree in Fine Arts and Dance.
She graduated from Madison High School and was the first special needs student to become part of the Madison High Varsity cheerleading squad. She also teaches and assists with other special needs dance classes at CONNECTION in Summit. And she is certified in Zumba 1 & 2, Zumba Gold, and Zumba Kids and will be teaching an after-school program 1 hour Zumba class at Washington Avenue School this Fall.
