Shaker Heights Builds a Beloved Community

While most kids across the nation looked forward to sleeping in and aging a day off, hundreds of Shaker Heights students spent the day “on”  for the first districtwide MLK Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It says a lot about the sense of community that exists in Shaker Heights. I was shocked when I saw the number: 600, both big and small, came out to help with this event!

They spent their day off doing acts of kindness for the homeless or home-insecure of Greater Cleveland. They knotted warm fleece blankets; put together personal care and hygiene kits; and collected socks. And then they spoke from the heart as they wrote note to each recipient to remind them that they are not forgotten; they are, indeed, a part of what Dr. King called the “beloved community.”
This event was sponsored by PTO Council CommUnity Builders, the Shaker Schools Foundation and Game On! Sports 4 Girls in partnership with HandsOn Northeast Ohio and Bellefaire JCB’s Homeless and Missing Youth Program. Click for more:
