Jo etvagyat at Lucy’s Sweet Surrender!
By Bill LeahyWe are fortunate to have an authentic Hungarian bakery located within easy walking distance of our Shaker Heights, Ohio, home (though some might say proximity makes it irresistible to succumb to temptation). Lucy’s Sweet Surrender is an attractive little oasis at which delicious pastries, including old style cookies, strudel, tea biscuits, muffins and doughnuts (Dunkin’ Donuts, eat your heart out!) are available from the owners, Mike and Marika Feigenbaum.Lucy’s would be right at home in a lovely residential neighborhood in New York with its authentic “Ma and Pa” ambiance; and the opportunity to kibitz with Mike and Marika (unless she’s busy baking). And, yes, there are tables in the event you are unable to wait until you reach home or work to enjoy your tea biscuit. For those of us who are “regulars”, Marika treats us like family members entering her home. She offered our three little Ridgewood, NJ, grands the opportunity to watch or help her as she prepares the dough for strudel. If your morning experience at Lucy’s leaves you thinking Hungarian for dinner, take out wienerschnitzel from Balaton Restaurant in historic Shaker Square. Trust me, a small order (which includes spaetzle, crisp, fresh salad with savory dressing on the side and bread you will never forget) is more than enough for two.Jo etvagyat!
