IS SUMMIT ATOP OF THE UPPITY LIST?
The website RoadSnacks.net recently published a list of the “Top Ten Snobbiest Places in New Jersey” and Summit made the list. Summit – a snobby town? This idea may shock you or, more likely, you may just be astounded Summit came in 9th place and not at the top of the list!
Surprisingly, where each town places on the snob-o-meter is all based on numbers, not perceptions. RoadSnacks, a website whose goal “is to show you the real side of places that not everyone wants to hear” was very deliberate with their research.
In compiling the hoity-toity list, only towns whose population was greater than 5,000 were considered. This whittled the number of contenders down to 236. Then each one of the 236 towns was ranked based some seriously snooty criteria; median household income and median home price; private schools per capita and theaters per capita; percentage of the population with a college degree; and finally the number of art galleries per capita.
Towns were ranked in each of these categories from 1 to 236. Those scores were then averaged. After all the calculations were done, the lower the town’s score, the snobbier it was considered. Mathematically, that is.
Here’s what RoadSnacks said about Summit:
“Home to The Summit Playhouse, the Summit Opera, and the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, this city of just over 21,000 puts the arts in artsy fartsy. And with a median home price of nearly $800,000, they put the “OH MY GOD” in “OH MY GOD THESE HOMES ARE EXPENSIVE.” But hey, it’s the price you pay for having the privilege to tell people you live in Summit.”
In fact, of all the snooty towns that made the list, Summit’s median home price was the highest.
Hilltoppers, highbrow or not, should not take offense at making the snobby list. RoadSnacks admits it’s rankings are all in good fun! You can read RoadSnacks full article here here
