Gonggi – My New Fave Game!

Last month it was Fidget Spinners, and THIS month is is Gonggi! The big difference? Fidget Spinners were supposed to aid children with Attention Deficit Disorders and were unfortunately doing the opposite – distracting students as they worked! Now I notice a new game has caught on and this one can’t be played during actual academic time, but during recess. Watching the kids played reminded me of my youth and the endless hours of playing Jax. I still love a good game of Jax every now and then. Thanks to Boardgeek.com here are the simple rules to playing this fun, Korean classic:

1. Cast the gonggi on the ground

2. Pick up one piece and toss it in the air. While it’s in mid-air..

3. Pick up another piece from the ground and then catch the falling piece before it hits the ground.

4. Continue by repeating this, keeping the pieces you have collected in your hand while alternately tossing one piece in the air and collecting one from the ground.

5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 but collecting the stones from the ground in twos. Then by threes, and finally all four at once.

6. When all the rounds are complete you may try to score points. Gently toss all the pieces into the air and try to catch them on the back of your hand. Score points equal to the number of pieces you’ve caught on the back of your hand.

If your kids play sports, this is worth the read.
