Early Math: Building a Can-Do Attitude

In the rush of the day, it’s easier to overlook the fact that math is an essential piece in much of what we do, presenting a great opportunity to teach it to the little ones. PBS.org has a good piece designed to help nurture the development of those early math skills. Two of the tips include:

– Talk with your child about your reasoning when you are measuring ingredients for a recipe, estimating how long something will take to accomplish or figuring out change. Get him or her to share in the process too.

– Being wrong can help you be right. Discuss it with your child when you make a mistake in your calculations and how you solved the problem. Your thought process will help your child see that mistakes can be learning opportunities.

All of these actions aid in building your child’s “can-do” attitude toward math. PBS.org also lists a selection of books that provide more ways to nurture your child’s early math skills.
