13th Annual Wiffle for Cancer
The 13th Annual Wiffle for Cancer tournament in memory of Nick Currey will be held on Sunday, June 11th, starting at 12:00 noon at Ridgewood High School, 627 East Ridgewood Avenue in Ridgewood. (Check-in begins at 11:30 a.m.)In the past 12 years, hundreds of players of all ages and skill levels have taken part in the event which has raised over $180,000 to date. All proceeds benefit the Nick Currey Fund and are used to support research to find a cure for Ewing sarcoma. The fund was created in memory of Nick Currey, Ridgewood High School Class of 2004, who lost his 14-month battle with Ewing sarcoma on November 3, 2005 at the age of 19. Nick was a lifelong player in the RBSA all the way through 12th grade Bonvarlet.
Participants are invited to put together a team of 3 to 5 players and register at www.wiffleforcancer.org.There is a $50 registration fee per team.Additional donations are always very much appreciated. The tournament features two divisions-a “competitive” division for those teams (high school and college age boys/girls and competitive adults) who want to compete seriously for a shot at bragging rights as tournament champion, and a “recreational” division for those teams (younger kids and noncompetitive adults) that primarily just want to have fun and support the cause.Players of all ages are welcome. The recreational division is the best choice for younger kids.Teams in each division will be grouped into four-team brackets for an initial round robin. Each team will play every other team in the bracket once, so every team is guaranteed to play at least three games. At the end of the round robin, the top teams will advance to a single elimination championship round. There are trophies for the winning teams as well as best team name and shirt.Any questions should be directed to Ralph Currey at wiffleforcancer@gmail.com.
