Why is Spinach Good for You?
Even Popeye knew that spinach was good for you. Like all green leafy veggies, Spinach is low in fat and even lower in cholesterol. It’s also high in the good stuff like niacin and zinc, as well as protein, fiber, vitamins A, C, E and K, thiamin, vitamin B6, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and manganese. Plus, it’s a bright, colorful addition to any plate.
A recent study on the relationship between the risk of prostate cancer and vegetable intake looked the benefits of eating spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, mustard greens, turnip greens, collards, and kale. Only spinach showed evidence of significant protection against the occurrence of aggressive prostate cancer.
Rich in vitamins and minerals, spinach is high in health-promoting phytonutrients like carotenoids (beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin) and flavonoids that are powerful antioxidants.
Just 1 cup of spinach provides 987% of DRI of Vitamin K and 105% of DRI of Vitamin A.
So follow Popeye’s lead: go make that salad with spinach!
