Playgrounds for Parents

For about 10 years I have spent many, many hours at all kinds of parks and playgrounds for my daughters. I’ve always found it hard to just sit and watch and my time efficiency usually kicks in. I then created ways to get little workouts in while my kids played. But I have to admit, it’s tough doing monkey bars when your feet are dragging on the ground or climbing the jungle gym takes all of 2 steps. Well, the good news is that ADULT playgrounds are starting to pop up around the country. Yup – you read that right, playgrounds for adults, big people- think 12 years and older (and heavier/bigger) so no fear of breaking anything and all apparatus is size appropriate. Those of you who despise the “work” aspect in workout may be more inspired to fitness by putting the “PLAY” back into exercise. Just like our kids can play for hours, adults with aversions to structured exercise may be more inclined to be active in these venues. Taking a page from China and parts of Europe, Macombs Dam Park in the Bronx is a test playground in NYC. There are plans to build more than 20 others across the five boroughs. Not near the New York area? Check out playgrounds in Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, Seattle, New Orleans, Greensboro, Albuquerque, Tucson, Nashville, San Antonio, Alburnett, Thermal, Charlotte, Springfield Township and more to come.

Modeled after traditional playgrounds, the hope is to entice adults off their behinds and get outside and moving. The playgrounds are free and provide all the equipment needed. As adults – we already know what to do with the playground equipment. When something is easy, accessible and FUN, people will be more inclined to continue doing that “something” so if it’s fitness related – it only has the added benefit of being great for us to do. And if that wasn’t positive enough, just think of the impact you’ll have on your kids as they see you not only taking the time to exercise but having fun doing it. If your kids are old enough, they can join you too for a family fitness outing.
