I Wonder …

“The sign of intelligence is that you are constantly wondering. Idiots are always dead sure about every damn thing they are doing in their life.” – Vasudev

I am especially loving this quote for my Wellness Coaching patients. I don’t take the hard stance Vasudev (Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, Indian author, yogi and mystic) does, for I don’t think it is just idiots who hold onto their beliefs so tightly. It is all of us — and I refuse to think we are all idiots.

Even the most open and curious among us, can hold onto destructive beliefs about herself. For example, “I believe I am disorganized,” therefore my desk will always hold clutter. “I believe I am overweight,” therefore I will always struggle with my relationship with food. We reinforce our beliefs with our behaviors and in turn our beliefs prevent us from making positive change.

Say “I wonder” to yourself the next time you paint yourself with a negative brush. Take a moment to wonder if what you’ve been self-identifying as all this time is actually wrong.

I wonder if I truly am ________.

I wonder why I think I am ________.

I wonder if I am wrong about myself.

I wonder what I can change.

Say “I wonder” when you really think you know AND when you really think you don’t. It is amazing how the vocabulary can change the perception.

The wisdom begins with wonder. — Socrates
