Why You Should Eat More of This Power Grain
You know quinoa has become more popular because finally people can pronounce it! It is hailed as a health food, and putting it on my table certainly makes me feel good, but should it? My little kids make such a mess eating it, is it worth it?
It is. Not only is it good to get your kids used to different flavors and textures, (quinoa pops like caviar) but it really is good for you.
— It is an ancient grain, so it is largely unchanged for thousands of years. For comparison, wheat has been changed so many times, most experts believe it is the cause of all the intolerances we see today. Also, it isn’t a true grain, it is more of a seed (we still call it a grain.)
— Compared with other grains, it is high in antioxidants — antioxidants fight heart disease and cancer.
— Quinoa contains zinc which helps your immune system.
— It is full of magnesium, which is great for your bones.
— It is full of protein, iron, and folate.
Quick note: If you are a brown rice fan, quinoa has more fat and more sodium.
- 1 cup of cooked brown rice has about 215 calories and 1.75 grams of fat.
- 1 cup of cooked quinoa has 220 calories and 3.5 grams of fat.
Although quinoa has a little more fat, it has more protein and dietary fiber per serving and is better at fighting cholesterol. Bottom line: mix up your whole grains and limit the white stuff.
