The Magic Is Back

magicThe Magic Fountain, Summit’s old-timey, iconic ice cream stand, had only been open a few weeks when, on the morning of Saturday, April 11 the Summit Fire Department received a report of smoke coming from the Summit landmark. Summit’s bravest responded at 7:47 AM and declared the fire under control at 8:39 AM, but not before the building sustained significant damage.

The ice cream stand’s storage and attic areas were the most compromised, and there was smoke and heat damage throughout the entire building. The Magic Fountain had to be closed down before the first day of summer even arrived. Luckily, no one was injured in the fire.

The Magic Fountain is not just a Summit summertime staple. Crowds from Chatham, Madison and New Providence eagerly await its opening every spring. It’s not unusual to see lines wrap around the building on any given evening – or afternoon! News of the fire and closing of the Magic Fountain spread through out town. Social media was littered with posts about the loss.

On the morning of September 4, Hilltoppers were greeted with this post on Magic Fountain’s Facebook page:

open

Summit is typically a pretty quiet place Labor Day weekend, but the lines outside the Magic Fountain were long and continuous.

So stop by for your Magic Blend (delicious soft serve ice cream blended with your choice of candies and toppings.) Most of us think of Labor Day as the “unofficial” last day of summer, but it’s never too late to order one more ice cream cone…or two… or three!
