Prom 2012… dress trends
Despite all of the details leading up to prom, which now include finding a perfect party bus and shore house– the prom dress takes the top spot. The task of selecting your perfect prom dress is always difficult, especially now that all the dresses must be posted on Facebook and no two dresses can be the same! Here are the trends for prom 2012, hopefully this will help make you decision a little easier!
Overall, the major theme for the prom season this year is color! Jewel tones and bright vibrant hues such as eggplant, violet, tangerine, magenta, sapphire, emerald, and coral are very popular. Bright colors tend to enhance skin tone and can result in a tan, or glowing effect. Jewel tones can pair easily with both gold and silver jewelry, making accessorizing a snap! If you are looking to create a soft feminine or princess-type look, opt for a pastel colored dress such as blush, lilac, mint, or nude. Lace detailing and embellishments can add to this look, coupled with loose romantic hair and delicate jewelry.
This year it’s all about the embellishments:
High-Low: This year this trend is all the rage– if you want to show off those legs, yet maintain a formal silhouette, this type of dress is the perfect choice. With high-low hemlines all over the runways in 2012, every designer is sure to have multiple styles to choose from.
Cut Outs: There is no place you won’t see a cut out this year! A flash of skin hints at your killer figure. For a classy look choose a cut out dress with smaller body slits, peek-a-boo backs, and slitted shoulders.
Bling: Is it possible for a dress to have too much bling? Not this year! There are many designers opting for all sequined, beaded, or rhinestone gowns. These dresses are sure to turn heads when you walk into a room– just make sure not to go overboard with your jewelry!
Feathers: This fun and flirty embellishment is now seen everywhere. From ballgowns to cocktail dresses feathers make for a truly unique touch.
Mirros: This trend started a few years ago and is not going anywhere soon! You will see mirrors on tons of dresses from all designers!
Lace: This year lace is being used as an accent or small embellishment to make for an elegant look on some beautiful gowns. Look for dresses with lace bodices, ruffles for skirts, or underlays.
Ruffles: This trend entered the market last year and has since exploded. You will find mermaid styled gowns with ruffled bottoms as well as ball gowns.
This year the prom dress is all about texture, shape, structure– the same themes of the red carpet at this years Oscar’s. Michelle William’s, in her coral Louis Vuitton gown, was a perfect mix of both texture and shape. Rooney Mara went for a simple yet intricately designed white gown which became the most talked about dress because of its texture and dramatic back, which is also a prom trend.
Overall, pick something that reflects your personality and that you genuinely love and feel beautiful in. Prom is one of those moments that you will talk and reminisce about for years.
