Friendship Development, Popularity, and Social Cruelty in Childhood

MONDAY, APRIL 8

The Wellbeing Speaker Series presents Dr. Michael G. Thompson, bestselling author of Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys, Best Friends, Worst Enemies, and more. Dr. Thompson will be joining the district for a full day of events including two parent presentations (one in the daytime and one in the evening), a program for district administrators, and a professional development presentation for faculty members. Statistics point to an alarming number of young boys at high risk for suicide, alcohol and drug abuse, violence and loneliness. The daytime program, The Nature of Boys, sets out to answer a basic, crucial question: What do boys need that they’re not getting? Thompson makes a compelling case that emotional literacy is the most valuable gift we can offer our sons. The evening program, Best Friends, Worst Enemies will discuss friendship development, popularity, and social cruelty in childhood. The programs will help parents to gain a deeper understanding of the motives and meanings of social behavior in children.
