February – American Heart Month
This month is all about the heart. Go Red for Women a campaign with the American Heart Association advises that more women die from heart disease in this country than cancer. The Heart Truth is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute which is an awareness program for women about heart disease. The children in elementary schools all over the U.S. completed Jump Rope for Heart this week. One of the thoughts behind this, is to get children to learn early on about heart disease and maybe it will help them make better decisions about their own health as they get older. Heart Disease is the number one killer of women. It is important to know what we can do to help prevent this disease. Get started by talking with your physician. The American Heart Association has a great website and if you look under Getting Healthy, there is a lot of great information. It will help you understand everything from stress management, physical activity, and nutrition. I personally feel compelled about this awareness program due to our loss of a young family member, who passed away at a very young age from heart disease. If we had known back then what we know now maybe things could have been prevented. What we can do is look ahead and promote American Heart Month. Please make sure you focus on it not only for the 29 days but for the rest of your life. That’s from me to you.
