How to Predict Whether or Not We’ll Have a Snow Day
Big news at dinner tonight was that there was a 79% chance that we’d have a snow day Thursday. I had heard about a possible snow storm but was curious how my 12 year knew about it. She doesn’t exactly follow the news. She DOES, however, follow snowdaycalculator.com–religiously! News to me.
Apparently, the Snow Day Calculator began as a middle school project designed by Watchung NJ student, David Sukhin back in 2011. The calculator factors in variables along with hour-by-hour updates from weather.gov The calculator can automatically get weather information for any zip code in the United States and receives almost 250,000 visitors to the site each time a snowstorm is predicted. Predictions for the next two days go up each day at noon.
