For kids, setting up their own business is about a lot more than just making money. It’s something to do that’s fun and exciting, and the money part can often be an added bonus. From an educational point of view, encouraging a child’s entrepreneurial spirit teaches kids skills they will use throughout life. Here are some ideas to get your kids started.

Homemade dog cookies and treats. These can be sold at the dog park. Find a recipe for homemade dog treats, wrap in a beautifully designed paper wrapper, display a company name, and phone number “where you could order more”.

Painted Shells. Kids love collecting sea shells. They spend their time digging, looking for the best shells on the beach. Each is very proud of his or her collection by the end of the day. Why not let them paint them and sell them on the next sunny day. Each is beautiful and unique.

Gourmet food produce. This doesn’t have to be bake-sale stuff but can include more gourmet foods, such as jams and preserves, flavored vinegars and olive oils, cookie dough or gifts in a jar, and even packets of homemade granola.
