Resume Writing – And Career Planning – After Hiatus From Job Market

For many moms, the biggest question is “where to begin?” when it comes to creating a resume or career plan after a hiatus from the job market. Fran Kelley, a Certified Professional Resume Writer as well as a Certified Job & Career Transition Coach, hears that question a lot and has all the answers. In a recent interview, Fran, who is also the founder of The Resume Works, detailed the key steps to getting your resume – and career – together:

Establish a target position:
– Ask yourself what direction you want to go in at this stage of your life. Is it back to your previous career or something entirely new?

Access your level of computer skills:
–  Take classes as needed to bring your skills up to speed. At a minimum, be sure you have at least a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. These applications are almost universally used.

Look into certification programs:
– Community colleges often offer short-term certification classes in a range of industries. – Achieving a certification does wonders in terms of bridging a gap of employment, enabling you to put a current date on an accomplishment.

Think about your community involvement:
– What skills have you used in your school and community volunteering during a work hiatus such as fundraising, marketing, team-building, and/or strategic planning? All of these skills have a place on your resume.

Get your resume professionally done:
– Without a doubt, it is a competitive job market. Put your best foot forward when it comes to your resume.

Start networking!
