Drive-In Movies

Drive-in movies are a great part of pop culture history – and there aren’t many left these days. First of all, make sure you’re wearing comfy clothes. Let your kids wear their PJ’s to the show, so that when they fall asleep (most movies don’t start until dark/9:00 pm), you can just carry them to bed. You might bring a blanket, too, or lawn chairs, if it’s a nice night some of you may decide to sit outside of the car. Depending on how the sound system works at the theater, you will probably want to have a good radio or boom box that gets good radio reception. Unless the theater still has those old-fashioned speaker boxes on poles, the soundtrack will probably be broadcast on a local radio frequency, which they’ll post on the movie screen before the film starts. You probably won’t want to run the car radio for that long, so having a boom box with batteries is a good idea. The heart of any good drive-in is the snack-bar. Bring cash for hot dogs, drinks, candy and popcorn. Or, if you want to bring something special to share, maybe bake some brownies or bring along fresh fruit. A water bottle might also be useful if you don’t like sugary snack-bar drinks. Finally, if you’re going to be spending any time sitting outside, or even if the car windows will be rolled down, you’ll want to be sure you’re protected from insect bites. Wear a good insect-repellant and bring it with you to share.
