Sweat Proof Sun Protection

Photo courtesy of CoolibarWhat’s you’re summer event? Running, golfing, sailing, swimming, tennis, or team sports? Certainly we all know that we need to protect our skin from the harmful rays of the hot sun, but athletes and outdoor exercise enthusiasts need to take extra precautions due to sweating and dehydration. Regular sun protection may not be cutting it for you. Here are some guidelines from the Skin Cancer Foundation for Outdoor activities:

-Use a Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB sun block

-Minimum of SPF 15 or greater

-Use sport specific sun block that is water and sweat resistant, such as, Coppertone Sport, Blue Lizard, Vanicream, KINeSYS and SolBa

-Re-apply often, as sweat and movement will cause the sun block to wear off

-Don’t forget your hands, back of neck, lips and ears

-Wear a visor or better, a hat that covers the head (vented caps allow air circulation to keep you cooler)

-Invest in good sport shades to protect your eyes but won’t slip with sweat or cause a goggle effect of trapping in the heat and sweat (nothing worse than sweat and sun block in the eyes)

-Consider using UFP (ultraviolet protection factor) 30 or higher clothing – specifically made to absorb some of the suns UV rays and still act like workout clothing. Aside from the likes of Nike, Under Armour, Columbia and REI, find UPF fitness wear at the following:
